Name: Admiral Sir Edward Pellew, Viscount Exmouth (to give his proper title. But just plain Sir Edward will do just fine.) Age: looks like he's in his thirties, but technically should be in his early fifties (chronologically, at least). [see below for explanation]. Physical Appearance: The ‘time jump’ has rendered him looking pretty much as he did when he was as a famous frigate captain. In his thirties, at least. Tall, dark brown/black hair, brown eyes. And the Navy uniform, of course. Which by this stage has a fair amount of gold braid added on Education: fair – can read and write, and seems reasonably well educated (he quotes literature, poetry etc. throughout the series on occasions), but no good with languages – he can read a little French, but not speak it (except for the barest of basics), and has to rely on Hornblower for translations on occasions. Occupation: Admiral, outgoing Commander-in-Chief of the West Indies station (soon to be appointed to the Mediterranean) Significant Other: not that we are aware of in the miniseries (or at least it’s not mentioned) – but according to history, he is married at this time. Sexual Preference: straight. In 1795 he was given command of the frigate Indefatigable, which was to become his most famous ship. And this is where we come into contact with Sir Edward in both the miniseries and the novels, when Hornblower is assigned midshipman on the HMS Indefatigable (fondly known as the ‘Indie’ by some). (the following is miniseries continuity) He immediately chews out the young midshipman for the duel with Simpson, stating that with the recent declaration of war with France, England needs all the men she can get, and forbids Hornblower from further dueling. However, he will not judge the young man for that, and indeed later seems quite impressed by him, saving his life when in a second duel with Simpson, the man attempts to knife Hornblower – he is shot by Captain Pellew. Pellew becomes a sort of gruff father figure for Hornblower – or at the very least, he views Hornblower almost like a son, worrying over him – though he tries not to show it. Indeed, he often likes to have his little joke with Hornblower – it must be fairly tempting to lead the somewhat serious Hornblower on at times ^_^ (and he steals a lot of lines in the miniseries that were originally given to other Captains and Admirals in the books...the sneaky bugger.) They part company eventually at some unspecified time, presumably when the Admiralty promote Pellew and assign him to a larger ship (when he was hoping to stay with the Indie) and Hornblower is assigned as lieutenant to the ship of the line HMS Renown (probably promoted/assigned by Pellew himself?). Alas, they meet in less favourable circumstances – Hornblower up for a courtmartial over the death of Captain Sawyer of the Renown, and Commodore Pellew one of the officers presiding over the trial. Hornblower is eventually acquitted and given a new command, which he loses when peace is made with France. During this period, Pellew helps out Hornblower by partnering him at whist against wealthy opponents in the Long Rooms – winnings going to help Hornblower support himself (having lost his commander’s pay). Later Hornblower is given command of a sloop, the Hotspur, by Pellew – who by now is an Admiral and Commander-in-Chief of the Channel Fleet. One of his last acts as C-in-C of that particular station, before he is promoted, is to appoint Hornblower to post-Captain. And that, in a nutshell, is where the miniseries leaves us. But that is not entirely the end of the story. For some as yet unknown reason, he has been removed from his time stream (perhaps just as he is sailing home briefly to London to report to the Admiralty for his new posting?), and lands in some strange medieval world, where he has no recollection of his previous life. He served as Chief Justice - posted to a little town called Smallbridge to help his old friend Baron Horatio clean up corruption there, where he worked frequently with the very tough (and often scruffy) outlaw hunter Sir James. Then, just as mysteriously as he came, Pellew was plucked from this medieval world, and his memories restored. Just in time to discover that Sir James was actually Commodore James Norrington, and that they had found themselves in Canada, several hundred years in the future. Upon their arrival, Norrington was almost run over by a car driven by Simon Templar, who Norrington considered a ‘gentleman of high disrepute’. Pellew, on the other hand, rather liked the man, and assisted him to carry a resisting Commodore into the car, so they could actually get somewhere. They ended up staying with Simon at first, but the two naval officers pooled their pocket change and sold it for quite a bit of money to an antique dealer. Enough money to not only purchase their own apartment (which ended up being the lower floor of Simon’s duplex), but the old town marina as well (which was going for a song). It was going to take a lot of work to restore it, being quite run down. But at least they now had a project on their hands. And maybe, if things were doing really well in the future, they might consider buying a sail boat (or two). Things were going well, until the disappearances started happening. First Simon – gone without a trace. Then, one day, Pellew awoke to find Norrington missing as well. There wasn’t much he could do – the local police didn’t seem very interested. So, he took over Simon’s apartment (which wasn’t even in the man’s real name), and kept on fixing up the marina. It was going to take a lot of work now it was just himself, but it was the least he could do for his missing fellow officer. | How Others Perceive Your Character: He’s generally regarded as a fair and just decision maker, who will not let his opinion be swayed by others. He is also known to possess a rather wicked and biting sense of humour, and is highly regarded someone of high rank who is not afraid of getting his hands dirty (and in fact, actually enjoys doing so). Beliefs, Convictions, Morals: Unlike most commanding officers, Sir Edward will not let himself be swayed by the opinions of others, when it comes to his men. Instead, he prefers to judge a person by what he sees – ie. what the man actually does under his command. He has a strong sense of duty, and the desire to succeed in whatever he does – usually involving him taking a direct control in events. He’s quite unusual for a fairly high ranking flag officer in that he will not hesitate to get involved in skirmishes, or any task that needs doing. Indeed, it is said that he doesn’t expect his men to do anything that he wouldn’t do himself. He seems to be ‘in his element’ on a ship, and has often been described as a ‘born frigate-captain’, in that he is suited to the relative independence and freedom of such a command. Strongly against dueling, Sir Edward makes it a point to forbid his officers from doing so. Reason(s) for Escaping to Canada: He didn’t. Sir Edward found himself stuck in some crazy medieval world along with Commodore Norrington. They were then sent out of the world just as unexpectedly as they entered it. Only instead of being returned to their proper times, they landed up in present day Canada. Their DHAs [Dreams, Hopes, and Aspirations] for Canada: to try and figure out this strange new world, and figure out how (if at all) to return back home. To maybe try and find out how come some of his friends and acquaintances have mysteriously disappeared, and to keep on working on restoring the old marina. Maybe even acquire a sailing vessel (with actual sails). 1. What turns them on: sailing 2. What turns them off: having nothing to do. He’s not one for sitting back and watching, or ‘resting on his laurels’, so to speak. 3. Would they see a shrink: most certainly not. 4. Worst Childhood experience: when his father died 5. Favorite Film: I’d say something like Master and Commander – except that would be sort of like watching a documentary for him ^_^ 6. Favorite Song: no idea. Perhaps something picked up from his time in the Navy? 7. Favorite Word: duty – or more specifically, the doing of. 8. Least Favorite Word: Frogs (see:French.) 9. Favorite Curse Word: damnit. But probably a few choice others as well. 10. Best gift ever received: the Indefatigable (which is probably the favourite out of all the ships he’s had to command.), and his wife Susannah. 11. Sound or Noise they hate: cannons fired…at one of his ships. 12. Sound or Noise they love: wind in the sails. Or playing a good game of whist. 13. Do they know the answer to 64 million dollar question: No, but the Admiralty probably does. 14. [Complete the sentence] ... All the world's a stage...and..er…well…Shakespeare was never my strong point at school, damnit! 15. Did Yoko Ono really break up the Fab Four: ah, er…oh my, is that the French? I’d better be off! *disappears* 16. Chuck Norris or Bruce Lee: Sir Francis Drake. 17. Half full or half empty: half full. 18. Coke or Pepsi: he’d much rather prefer a glass of wine and a good game of whist. 19. If they were a Jellybean flavor, which one:no idea. Probably something different and unexpected for a jellybean flavour. Just because. 20. And, finally, if Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? “You did well, Sir Edward. I’d ask you to come in and relax, but I know you probably won’t do that. Susannah is waiting for you, and a fellow by the name of Nelson. He mentioned something about a game of whist?” And for Aternaville purposes, let’s say that Sir Edward was assigned C-in-C to the West Indies squadron instead of the East Indies – just so he would indeed be familiar with the same kind of area as Norrington, and would be aware of Port Royal etc. Part of his more recent history came from gameplay in "He himself had been a dashing young officer once. Now he had far more sympathy than ever before with the older men who had entrusted him with enterprises." |
